Lisbon: the perfect combination of history and liberal thought

Introduction

At Triplemelon, we’re passionate about traveling to places that allow us to enjoy the most stunning natural landscapes in the world. However, we don't limit ourselves to just those sites. Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, is one of the most charismatic cities in Europe, offering a perfect blend of traditional heritage and history with modernity and progressive thinking. With its privileged climate, in Lisbon, you can enjoy both its rich culture and history, as well as its vibrant nightlife. It's a liberal city that we’re sure won’t disappoint. Just be ready to tackle plenty of hills! Here’s a 4-day itinerary to help you make the most of Lisbon.

Plan

Day 1

Arrival in Lisbon / Avenida da Liberdade

  • Arrival mid-morning.
  • Transfer to the hotel. We recommend that you stay in the centre and, if you come by car, look for one with parking, as parking is not allowed in the centre of Lisbon and its surroundings.
  • Lunch in the area. Try traditional Portuguese food. We chose Cod for this first time.
  • Walk along Avenida de Liberdade, Plaza dos Restauradores and surroundings.
  • Visit the Church of San Roque, the Palace of the Marquises of Minas and the Viewpoint of San Pedro de Alcantara.
  • You will be able to see trams running along streets with steep slopes.

Day 2

Free Tour through the center: Baixa, Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré

  • FREE TOUR of the Baixa in the morning (we started at Plaza Luis de Camoes). You will see the most emblematic places in the center: Santa Maria Maior area, the Santa Justa Elevator, the Cathedral, San Jorge Castle and the Commerce Square, among others.
  • Grilled meat lunch on Rua das Gáveas, near Luis de Camões.
  • Stroll through Bairro Alto/Chiado.
  • Visit the 'Libreria Bertrand', which holds the Guinness Record for the oldest bookstore in the world.
  • Enjoy an excellent coffee at 'A Brasileira', on Rua Nova de Trinidade, in Chiado, next to the sculpture by Fernando Pessoa.
  • Stroll around the Cais do Sodré district and have dinner there. This area has a lot of nightlife and you will find many bars and pubs to have a drink.

Day 3

A walk through Alfama and Baixa / Belém district

  • Breakfast at the hotel.
  • Explore and get lost in the streets of Alfama and Baixa. Visit the Castle of St. George, the Mirador do Recolhimento, the Church and the Mirador de Santa Lucia, the Cathedral, the Church of Our Lady of the Old Conception and the 'Fado Vadio Graffiti Mural', among others.
  • Have a cake at the 'Confeitaria Nacional', in Plaza de Figueira. You'll feel like you're in a parlour from 50 years ago.
  • Enter the Church of Santo Domingo. This church burned down years ago and we found it surprising.
  • Lunch.
  • Tram E15 from Figueira Square to Belém.
  • If you go to Belém in the afternoon, we recommend this order: Monument to the Discoveries, Jerónimos Monastery and the Garden of the Plaza del Imperio, Tropical Botanical Garden and Afonso de Albuquerque Garden.
  • Stop for a coffee. We recommend the most famous place there, the pastry shop is 'Pasteis de Belém'. Also, you can't leave without trying the 'Pasteis de Belém'. You won't be disappointed. The most famous pastry shop is 'Pasteis de Belém'.
  • Continue with the Belém Tower and the Monument to the Overseas Combatants.
  • Enjoy a spectacular sunset. We recommend watching it between the Belém Tower and the Combatants Museum (there is a 'path' behind the museum).
  • Take the E15 tram back.

Day 4

Sintra: Pena Palace / return home

  • Have breakfast at the hotel.
  • Getting to Sintra: You can go by car (30 min) or by train from Lisbon (40 minutes from Rossio station). We went by car to Lisbon, so we drove there and then left directly.
  • Visit the Pena Palace. Arrive early to avoid queues. Admission costs about 20 euros.

Final considerations

  • This trip does not include visits to museums (except the Pena Palace) as it is a weekend trip.
  • If you are coming to Lisbon by car, look for a hotel with parking due to parking restrictions in Lisbon.
  • Wear comfortable shoes. The city is full of hills and you will constantly be walking up and down hills and cobblestone streets.
  • Enjoy street art. You will find singers or dancers with real talent.
  • Don't leave without trying the famous 'Pasteis de Belém'.
  • Interact with the local people and ask them what you need. They are very friendly and willing to help.
  • Be careful with the trams.

At Triplemelon we offer you this Travel Program to Lisbon so that you can experience a spectacular weekend in a city that mixes tradition and history with a liberal and progressive spirit. If you have any questions or want to customize your trip, we are here to help you with whatever you need. Get ready because Lisbon will surprise you!
